PEOPLE

PRINCIPLE INVESTIGATOR

Dustin Schones

Dr. Schones carried out his graduate training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, developing computational methods to analyze transcription factor binding sites. He did his postdoctoral training at the NHLBI/NIH where he developed some of the first computational methods for analyzing next generation sequencing data to study the role of chromatin in gene regulation. A recent CV can be found HERE

POST DOCS

Parijat Senapati

Parijat obtained her Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India, where she studied the role of histone chaperone NPM1 in transcriptional control of gene expression. Continuing her interest in chromatin biology, she is presently studying how aging and cancer leads to altered DNA methylation and chromatin state at transposons.

Heon Shin

Heon received his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences from Yonsei University, Korea, where he used cancer proteomics to study the posttranslational mechanisms for abnormal pancreatic cancer development. Currently, his research interests are integrated OMICs-based identification of the mechanisms of metabolic diseases.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

Kevin Chi

Kevin studied microbiology at UC San Diego, where he graduated from Muir College. He is interested in studying how interspersed repeats such as ERVs, LINEs, and SINEs can influence type 1 diabetes pathogenesis.

Kevin Costello

Kevin graduated from Cal Poly Pomona and is currently working to profile sources of epigenetic variability in mammalian genomes. He has specific interest in the “evolutionary arms race” mammalian genomes and ancient retro-viral elements that can lead to the development of novel traits.

Michael Lee

Michael Lee attended UC Berkeley where he completed his undergraduate studies in Molecular and Cell Biology, with an emphasis in cellular development in health and disease. He is currently interested in studying how remnants of ancient viral insertions into the human genome can both aid in the regulation of blood cell maturation and also impact disease.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATES

Hiroyuki Kato

Hiro received his MS degree from Tokai University School of Engineering in Kanagawa, Japan. Prior to joining the Schones lab, he worked at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, Japan where his research focused on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
